About Alexander Pope

Rustic-chic pub with a British menu and refined guestrooms, plus free Wi-Fi and parking.

This Young's & Co Pub/Hotel previously known as the Pope's Grotto takes its name from the poet (1688-1744) who had a house near by. The pubs name was to be controversially renamed the 'Alexander' after refurbishment in 2009. However, after the Strawberry Hill Residents' Association launched a petition to try and convince the PubCo to retain the original 150 year old historic name, a compromise was reached and it was called The Alexander Pope. The original Pope's Grotto pub was built by Young & Bainbridge in 1852 on part of Alexander Pope's old garden, but it was destroyed by bombs in the Second World War and the present building was opened in 1959. It was completely refurbished and upgraded in 2000 into a hotel with 32 bedrooms. Part of the front patio has been enclosed in glass to create a conservatory. Breakfast is served 7-10am weekdays. Tuesday is quiz night 8pm start.

Very comfortable hotel and great breakfast! The team went above and beyond to let us check in early ahead of a wedding, and the room was spacious, comfortable and clean. We would highly recommend.

We have just enjoyed a really great couple of nights at this hotel. Clean, spacious, modern and comfortable room and a convenient location. There are EV chargers in the car park that don't seem to be mentioned on the hotel website; they were really useful. Helpful staff. Nice food in the pub/restaurant area. We definitely recommend this hotel, it can't be faulted!

Thoroughly enjoyed our 1 night stay at the Alexander Pope in Twickenham. Ideal place with free hotel parking which is a major plus. We received a warm welcome on arrival and check in was quick and easy. There are lifts to the rooms as well as stairs. We were very pleasantly surprised as we entered the room. A huge bed with quality bed linen which aided a very good nights sleep. TV/mini bar/tea and coffee also in the room. The bathroom was luxurious, fab shower and so good to see quality Bramley toiletries provided. Nice location by the river and our room had a balcony overlooking the…

We love staying at The Alexander Pope and have done so on several occasions. We always find comfy and clean rooms, friendly staff, tasty food and a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The location is great too: opposite the river, a short walk from the main shopping street, good bus and train services (eg to Hampton Court and Richmond with links also to central London). Highly recommended:)

We booked a room for a night because it is close to the airport. The room was clean (so important for us) the mattress was really comfortable. The pub and restaurant were excellent. The breakfast was delicious. Super highly recommended!
