About Brook Gate

August 2023 - name changed to Brook Gate - from the Islington Tribune, "Sam Newson, publican since 2022, said: “Being called the Arsenal Tavern, whilst it’s nostalgic, doesn’t bring customers in – it alienates the majority of people. It gets its new name from the nearby waterway where fishermen once caught trout." For the full article go to

Closed suddenly in July 2019 but has now reopened. A recent visit (Nov 2021) shows that real ale has been reintroduced. At the bottom of the hill - needless to say, very busy on match days.

I recently visited this pub and had a very disappointing experience. I witnessed the manager rudely kicking out a group of six girls. They had just found a seat, and while three went to get drinks, the others just found a seat next to us and sat down for a moment and it looked like they were going to get a drink anyway. But within one minute, the manager came over and rudely told them they couldn't be there without a drink. The girls got up and got their drinks, except for one who just wanted some water first because she was dehydrated, but she was denied. The manager was extremely rude to…

One of the best pubs I’ve been to in ages. Amazing atmosphere, very decent prices, friendly staff. We went before the Wolf tones gig and we enjoyed it so much we had to go back after.

I came here with a friend to watch the football and there was an annoying irritating voice of this manager shouting at a group of girls that came in also to watch the football. He was just so rude and blunt to a bunch of young women for no reason. Looking at the way he responds to reviews someone must have hurt him cause no grown man acts like this. And guess what I BOUGHT a drink so what rubbish do you have to spit this way? Honestly disgusting. HAWK TUT… It’s really sad about this reply to my review yesterday and I wasn’t even part of those young girls that came in. I was completely…

Ladies be careful they have cctv in the bathroom, not sure if that is even legal? Girls like to adjust their outfits etc at the mirrors, you are being watched!!!!!! Should have signs in the toilet that you are being filmed… I didn’t realise until I was walking out… Bar staff are lovely, manager is so unwelcoming 🫣

The manager is possibly the vilest person I’ve ever had the displeasure of coming across in my life. He was screaming and swearing viciously at a group of us (all young women who had all bought drinks to watch the footy) just because one of us had asked for a tap water. I’ve never seen anyone act like that in my life, genuinely terrifying and sociopathic. His own staff were even apologetic on his behalf for his unhinged behaviour, but I guess they must see it all from him. All the reviews about him are bang on - steer clear of this place!!!
