About General Roy
Traditional-style local welcoming families with regular deals on a menu of pub favourites.
A large comfortable landmark pub refurbished in July/Aug 2011. Part of the Sizzling pubs chain. Quiz night every Wednesday from 8pm. The pub is named after General William Roy who made the first accurate land measurement in 1784. This allowed Britain to then create the first Ordnance Survey maps using triangulation. Pub has received an extensive three-week refurbishment in 2023.

First time visit to The General Roy this evening despite passing it all the time. Used both service at the bar and using the Sizzling app downloaded, and both worked just fine. Only one order seemed to go astray and had to goto bar but it was very quickly sorted with no problem at all. Food came quickly, despite being quite busy. The chicken burger was served hot, fresh and full of flavour. As a visitor to other Sizzling pubs, I noted the plate was smaller than usually get - I wish all others would take note of how this one is served. A giant plate for a burger and chips looks out of place…

Great pub, clean, good atmosphere, friendly helpful staff. The food was really good and great value. Lovely big pub garden. Really enjoyed it.

We booked a table for two for dinner (having never been) and was very surprised to find on arrival it's more a pub than an eatery. There was football on all TVs and the ambient noise extremely rowdy (it was Saturday, why shouldn't it be!). However, whilst we had luckily managed to find a table out of the way, it was uncomfortable to wait (30-40 minutes) for food in a loud and busy pub. The ambience as a pub was top class, the bar packed with regulars and lots of friendly and smiling bar staff who were happy to help. Went to The General Roy for the first time today. Prebooked a table that was ready for us when we arrived. Staff friendly and welcoming. Did try to use the app to order food but it didn't work but no problem ordering at the bar. Food came in a decent time. We all enjoyed our different option. Food for 7 came together all well cooked and hot and good value and decent portions.The desserts were wonderful although they didn't all come together but was no problem. Staff were brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. We were only visiting the area, and searched for a nice evening, for dinner. The General Roy looked like a nice pub, so we thought we would try it. My two teenagers and Husband, had amazing burgers. I picked fish and chips. Everything came out together, nice and hot and cooked perfectly. The staff were wonderful, with great recommendations with the food menu. We will definitely find a reason to come and visit here again! Thank you.
