About Griffin

Sprawling pub with 6 screens for sports, pub grub, outside bars, large garden and covered terrace.

Now offering two regular ales plus one guest; often Landlord or Tribute. Hophead will sometimes be available during the summer months.

Front L shaped bar with two large bay windows; a lovely place to sit especially when the sun is shining! An atrium brings light to the rear of the bar area.

Move into the garden and its like a Tardis!! Many different areas, some with TV screens for all sports events leading to a very large back garden and covered courtyard area with sofas.

When the kitchen is closed, you can bring in your own food,

Quiz night every Wednesday.

A chunk of the whetstone, which is thought to give the area its name, is located on the pavement outside. Legend has it that soldiers sharpened their swords on it before the Battle of Barnet (1471).

Some say Whetstone got its name as a corruption of 'West Town' and the stone was a mounting block in the days of horse drawn vehicles on the road to Scotland.

While the stone is Grade II listed, the pub is not although Barnet Council approved ACV status in March 2016.

Was in here on Friday, lunch time. It looks quite small from the outside but once inside it has lots of areas to go. It’s like a tardis. There was no accessible toilet but it does have toilets outside that are a single room, which would work as they are quite spacious. Although not sure a wheelchair would fit in. It was quite quiet when I visited which was great at the time. The staff were amazingly helpful and accommodating. I get the impression it comes to life in the evenings and at weekends, which I would love to see.

I usually come here when the weather is good due to the brilliant pub garden (definitely the highlight of the place). Tends to be busy with a good atmosphere on weekends, especially if sports are on. When it comes to a quiet indoor sit-down, however, I prefer the Three Horseshoes just up the road due to the number of fruit flies in The Griffin. I would change this review and probably go more often if they were able to get a handle on the situation, as the flies are a nuisance even in the Winter months. The food is fine, the service is better. Staff are great and generally very friendly. The…

Here in Whetstone for a few nights and I was glad to stumble on this traditional pub Variety of beers, a bit disappointed in the lack of malts but, hey….that’s me. Very friendly, mixed clientele - a proper local pub. Food was great too.

Waited 2hrs for food to be served, bar staff kept saying it was coming next but it never materialised. When the food did arrive it was missing key ingredients and sides mentioned from the menu. Not impressed. Great place for drinks and/or to watch football however, can't go wrong. Great beer garden too.

Visited on a Sunday as a group of 11 Was supposed to be for my Birthday lunch. When we got there we overheard there are no chips but we could deal as we wanted roast dinners only to be told there was no roast on the menu that day. Settled to order burgers etc, after 3 hours we enquired where our food was and got told it would be another hour or so. We got refunds and left. Shame as it could be a nice place, beautiful garden but didn't get to enjoy it.
