About Half Moon

Real ale pub with high ceilings and pavement tables, formerly a theatre, and a Methodist chapel.

Wetherspoons pub, opened in 1998, an award-winning conversion of a former Welsh Methodist chapel (built in 1900), which had later served as the Half Moon theatre. Two separate rooms, each with its own bar and a different selection of beers. The front room is the former chapel, with a dramatic central "lantern" feature, while the back room is in the modern extension, where the theatre stage used to be. Always very popular with a great mix including office, medical and student custom. Decent patio at side

I popped in here after The Baxter's in Hackney. This one looked like a former theatre, so the interior was nicely decorated keeping some original features. I had a Big Sea Mad Squirrel and enjoyed it outside in the impressive beer garden that resembled a courtyard. Worth visiting.

🚇 Stepney Green 🍺 £3.59 Carlsberg The Half Moon pub is located on busy Mile End Road close to Queen Mary University in Mile End in the East End of London. The nearest Tube is Stepney Green. This Wetherspoons pub used to be a Methodist chapel, built in 1900. In 1977, the disused chapel was taken over by the Half Moon Theatre Company, opening with a production of Robert Tressell’s The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists. In 1985, the theatre expanded into a derelict site next door, yet closed in 1990. Wetherspoons refurbished the two buildings and opened this pub in 1998. This Spoons…

We spent some days in London with our kids and had an apartment in Stepney Green. During such days, we loved to eat at the Half Moon. A nice pub with locals and students, good food and beer for a very good price. Very kind staff and super atmosphere. Highly recommended!
