About Travellers Friend

Relaxed pub serving hearty meals in a contemporary setting with an open kitchen and outdoor seats.

After five years under the ownership of two local families, this friendly, comfortable local was sold to the City Pub Co in summer 2018, following a complete refurbishment in 2017 when it was extended at the back and above. The rare snob screens have been moved from the bar counter to a position above the bar back. The original oak-panelling was removed, restored and reinstated, but some had to be replaced. There are picnic tables at the front and in the side beer garden. At the rear is a small car park. Up to eight real ales are normally available, including three changing beers and a house beer "Spivs IPA" (4.1%) from an unnamed brewery. Local CAMRA Pub of the Year 2015 & 2010.

Staff and Sunday roasts are good. Nice dining environment too. New owners have taken over and have stopped automatically adding service charge to the bill. Which is an excellent decision When I visited the menus still stated that a service charge is automatically added, but this can be ignored as it was just an old menu.

We went here for the Sunday roast and booked before hand. The pub itself looks lovely and is dog friendly but for the Sunday roast we were sat in an eating area in front of the kitchen. The food was lovely and service was very good as well. My only down side for me was the Roast Trio should come with crackling and mine didn’t. We did get extra roast potatoes and gravy though. Also I do think the coffee machine sounds like a jet engine and probably could be away from folk eating but that was only a noise towards the end of the meal.

Have been here on a few occasions. The dining room at the rear has been designed to a high standard, very comfortable seating and restaurants standards. We came here for Sunday lunch which was a little over prices for what you get. However the burger and chips were very good. The rest of the pub is also well kept. Service has always been good and staff quite chatty and polite as well as drinks and food menu fitting for the style of place. There is a lovely outside seating area to the side of the building which is great for when the sun is out. They also have a good range of beers including…

Another excellent roast beef lunch yesterday at The Travellers, a warm, friendly atmosphere and staff very attentive - special mention to Jenny who served us, we will be back very soon!

This place has really gone downhill. It went from being an underused pub to a popular gastropub with great food, to what it is now: a scruffy spot with frequent fights, no bouncers, overpriced drinks, and a generally poor atmosphere. It’s clear that since the closure of the Wetherspoons in Wanstead, the clientele has shifted here. Unfortunately, I won’t be returning.
