About Woolf & Whistle

On the ground floor of the Tavistock Hotel. With its stylish Art Deco entrance and very 1920s style bar (an Art Deco walnut looking bar with Art Deco silver inlay) off to the right from reception, this is a comfortable spot just off a splendid public square; still open fields at the end of the C18, once a place to hunt ducks and fight illegal duels.

The Square has strong literary connections – Dickens lived at the NE corner and here he wrote Bleak House, Little Dorrit and other works; Virginia and Leonard Woolf ran the Hogarth Press from the basement of No 52 and it is indeed from Virginia that the bar takes its inspiration. Reasonable priced hotel accommodation bearing in mind location.

During our stay at the nearby hotel, my girlfriend and I decided to try this restaurant, and it turned out to be an excellent choice! We opted for Indian cuisine, and even though we’re not used to experimenting much with food, we were thoroughly impressed. The chicken was perfectly cooked, and the flavors exceeded our expectations. Fred was warm and attentive, ensuring that every detail of our dinner was just right.

Great service, staff are genuinely very friendly! However the food was a huge let down. Ordered the steak and it came completely well done, after ordering med-rare. They remade the dish happily, however it came back rare and lacking in all flavour aspects. The peppercorn sauce was very watery and had no taste at all. The floor team is great in all areas, but the kitchen needs a lot of work. In terms of a spot, a lovely bar with great service, I just would not, personally, recommend the food!

Love going in here, very nice and comfortable to just sit and have a relaxing drink before dinner. Must try the food one day.

Food was pretty bad. Paid 20£ each for two steak meals. The steak was brutally tough. I had to cut the steak for my 13-yr old while my wife held the plate steady. My 17-yr old asked for a sharp knife from the kitchen and was able to power through it, but at the cost of scattering the chips and other garnishments from the plate (again required my wife to hold the plate to keep it from sliding all around). The steaks were cooked properly to the right doneness (one medium, the other medium rare), so it wasn't like they were overcooked, just a horrible cut of meat. I mentioned it to staff, but…
