About Carpenter's Arms

Regularly changing gastropub menu in a characterful room with black and white tiles round the bar.

First opened as a public house in 1871, owned by the Thomas Salt and Co Brewery. Now a cosy gastropub with secluded courtyard garden; the pub has attracted very good independent reviews for its food, e.g. serial entries in the Good Food Guide. Locals would be forgiven for keeping very quiet about this hidden gem, although the emphasis here is not on cask ale; the excellent menus change daily. Note restricted opening hours. Two local ales were reported at our last update; further news welcome.

In summer 2024 the pub was taken over by Wren Pubs as operator, also operating the Surprise in Chelsea and Walmer Castle in Notting Hill.

Delicious roasts and we came here on a Bank Holiday Monday and shared a few small plates. It's usually closed on a Monday and Tuesdays with the exception of Bank Holidays. The selection of small and main dishes and desserts makes it hard to choose! Food is fantastic, seasonal and super fresh. There is a large garden and its children and dog friendly. Highly recommend foe a weekend lunch or dinner with friends or family. Great selection of wine to top it off and only a 10 minute walk to the river

LOVED this pub. It wasn’t what we were expecting- it was more of a gastropub. the food was incredible (they just had a new chef come in) and creative and everything was absolutely delicious! We also loved the laid back vibe with mismatched furniture. will definitely be back to try the sunday roast.

Poor service and unfriendly staff - bar staff spilled half a pint on my shirt and trousers while serving. No real apology or anything offered to make up for it. Bathroom does not have locks. But...the outside seating is actually nice!!

Had dinner there with my friend. Food is nice but expensive, service charge 12.5% we had the lobster and mushroom risotto. Baked cheese cake was good. When I was back to see my friend in this area we will probably go to another local place as this pub is missing something that would make us return regularly.

Fantastic food, cannot rate well enough with a lovely wine list to match. The menu has a wonderful variety with fresh delicious ingredients and decent sized portions for the price
