About Clarence

Tall pub with London-themed wallpaper and tartan-backed seating, also offering British meals.

Imposing corner pub rebuilt in 1862, popular with tourists and civil servants, and probably named for the Duke of Clarence who was briefly Lord High Admiral in the late 1820s and oversaw naval affairs from an office opposite. As King William IV, history now remembers him mainly for his numerous illegitimate offspring, his salty naval language, and for having a head shaped like a pineapple!

The pub is close to Trafalgar Square and Horse Guards Parade, the Admiralty, the Banqueting House, and other government buildings. Following acquisition by Geronimo in 2009 the pub was extensively refurbished but keeping a part-timbered interior and its arched stucco frontage with Corinthian columns. It was refurbished again in 2023. There is an elegantly decorated Tin Belly Dining Room upstairs with views down Whitehall to Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament. Note steep stairs to WC.

Went to The Clarence specifically for their Scotch Egg and it didn’t disappointed. Service was friendly and quick. Atmosphere was great and very quiet (went around 4pm). The Scotch Egg was delicious, running egg and comes with a sauce on the side. Perfect fusion of flavours. Definitely recommend this pub and will come back for sure!

Best chicken pie in London! Lisa, Judith & Maria were wonderful and very accommodating. The sticky toffee pudding is also amazing! Must visit if you’re near Trafalgar Square. You won’t regret it! ❤️🫶

What a great pub! We were lucky enough to get a Scotch egg and it was so delicious and cooked perfectly. The chicken and leek pie was our other choice and it was so amazing. Nice and flaky and the chicken was so tender. Just writing this makes me want to have another! Highly recommended!

Great Atmosphere, but Serious Hygiene Concern Raised I recently visited this popular tourist spot, and overall, the ambiance and food were enjoyable. However, I wanted to share an important concern. During my visit, I went to the restroom and saw a male employee using the facilities while wearing silicone gloves, which he did not remove or wash after use. I brought this to our server’s attention, who politely thanked me and asked for a description of the employee. I understand that this place sees a high volume of tourists, and many might not check reviews like this, but I felt it was worth…

stopped in for lunch and had a great experience! The food was delicious (especially if you're looking for a good fish and chips) and our server Maria was amazing. So friendly and helpful, we would definitely come back on our next trip to London.
