About Devereux
Roomy Victorian pub with an island bar and outdoor drinking area tucked away in legal district.
Following a period of closure, this Grade-II listed venue (Historic England reference 1066888) reopened in March 2019 as "a proper pub". It is located in a quiet courtyard in the Middle Temple heart of London's legal district. The pub is deceptively larger inside than its exterior would suggest; wood panelling, booths, partitions and historical prints predominate. Note that, typical of pubs in central London, the stairs down to the toilets are steep and low-ceilinged.
Three to four ales are normally available on cask plus a range of craft keg and bottled beers; but post-pandemic, ale range will adjust to footfall. Good-value toasties and simple bar snacks are available.

Lovely pub hidden away not too far from Royal Courts of Justice. The staff were friendly and welcoming and they served a great selection of beers, wine and spirits. Their cheese toasties are amazing for £5

🚇Temple 🍺 £6.90 Asahi An historic pub In an atmospheric setting. The Devereux is hidden away in a small alleyway just off a quiet courtyard in Temple. The nearest Tube is Temple, it’s a five minute walk to get here. This pub opened in 1677 as The Grecian Coffee House, this historic pub was the favourite haunt of various historical figures, including Sir Isaac Newton, Sir Edmund Halley and Hans Sloane. The Devereux is Grade II listed and was refurbished as a pub in 1843. The pub is named after Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex and a famous parliamentary general in the Civil War; his red bust…

A fine member of the pub club around Temple, adding to the vibe and character of the locale with fine beers, both keg and cask. Lovely atmosphere in the pub helped by fast and friendly service at the bar. Apparently, both Sirs Isaac Newton and Edmund Halley regulars, although I suspect Edmund only pops in once every 76 years or so. Neither here during my visit! A simple Toastie menu, cheap but fine for a proper pub. A most enjoyable visit, I recommend.

We only found this place by accident on GM, but it was a great find. Comfortable inside with nice staff and a good range of drinks available.

Came here for a book launch party (which was very fun!) and definitely enjoyed it. The pizzas are decent and the staff were very helpful. The upstairs door to the function room does slam very loudly, though!
