About Eagle
Corner gastropub with a kitchen serving Mediterranean food, including its popular steak sandwich.
Generally reckoned to be the country's first gastropub, even though that term did not emerge until several years later. It was opened in January 1991 by Michael Belben and David Eyre, acquiring a former Watney's pub that was being disposed of after "The Beer Orders". Belben is still involved in its day-to-day running. It perhaps pioneered the use of mismatched tables and chairs, with panoramic windows and solid ash floor, world music and jazz in the background. The founders of Hackney Brewery were employed here which possibly explains why they provide the regular guest beers. The chef chalks the menu up five minutes before service and dishes come and go all the time in the course of the day. Their website has a live feed, updated at least twice a day! The Eagle Gallery was established by Emma Hill in the old function rooms above the pub and was one of the first alternative gallery spaces that opened in London in the early 1990s.

Great spot for gastropub fare - the cod, the linguine, the pork and the veal were delicious. Service was good and the ambiance is nice. They don’t take reservations, which is a bit inconvenient as it’s very difficult to get a table and space is very limited, which made the experience a bit challenging for me. Still, it’s worth going to at least once for the food and the service.

A wonderful London institution. Very small downstairs, but the food speaks for itself. The steak sandwich is exactly what it should be. Nothing fancy, just well executed tasty cuisine. Prices reflect the ethos of the pub, however they are on the high side (£17 for steak sandwich), but the portions are excellent. 100% recommended

Great pub food with a lively atmosphere 🍻 It gets busy in the evening, with a wait time of around 30-45 minutes ⌚

Underrated spot! A great boozer regardless, but the food is superb. Nothing fancy - just simple but delicious food (harissa scallops on point). Will definitely be returning.

Another one for which I wish I could give 6 stars. The food is incredible, and freshly made in the open kitchen behind the counter. The staff is super friendly and the famous steak sandwich is to die for. I really enjoyed having lunch here, great vibe.
