I was visiting Down House (home of Charles Darwin) yesterday and popped into this pub for lunch. It proved to be a very positive experience from start to finish! In the first place, I found Denise, who was serving at the bar, to be very pleasant, helpful and accommodating. We ordered our food and I was surprised at how quickly it arrived, yet still was of an excellent standard and presentation. As we were deciding where to sit, my friend mentioned that he didn’t like the high seats too much. Denise heard what he said, and immediately directed us to a different location where there was…

Our last walk of the year on the 30th Dec 2023, resulted in us having a small refreshment stop here. We were warmly welcomed, upon entering this gem of a traditional pub. The menu looked to be a great choice of the usual pub food. I'll note here that there's a large selection of pies. Which included their Festive December Pie. We weren't hungry on this occasion so chose their basket food, which was reasonably priced and arrived quickly. The rest room facilities were clean and tidy, and I'll note the men's was larger than most for this area. A queue for these would be a rare thing I'd say. In…

It could be so much better. Food was pricey and we had to walk through the pub to serve our own vegetables. Also saw a lady take a tumble on an unmarked step. Nasty

We both opted for the roast - slow roast pork belly and minted lamb shank. Good choice of vegetables from the buffet. All the food was beautifully cooked and extremely tasty.

Nice pub with tons of history. We all had pies, chicken, beef and Stilton and beef and ale. £22 for a pie and a ginger beer. Pastry was lovely and the filling was a good ratio of meat and gravy. Pub was empty and there was some quiet music playing but it was a quiet lunchtime so not much atmosphere. Staff are friendly and there are child/baby friendly facilities
