Princess Louise, London WC1

About Princess Louise

Real ale and pub grub in ornate Victorian bar with tiling, oak furnishings and etched glass panels.

A splendidly preserved pub displaying some of the finest examples of the Victorian art of public house building. Built in 1872 the interior includes marble, etched windows, enormous engraved and gilt mirrors, Portland stone columns, an ornate crimson and gold ceiling and a huge central island bar. The gent’s loos are worth a visit for more than the usual reason.

Large function room upstairs available for hire and is also where food is served, Mon - Sat 12.00 - 14.30 and Mon - Thu 18.00 - 20.30. Beer is especially good value for London. During 2007 the pub went through a comprehensive restoration which saw the reinstatement of the original multi-roomed layout with wood and etched glass dividing walls. This has completely changed its appearance and Sam Smith’s are to be commended for their attention to detail. A CAMRA Heritage Pub and winner of Refurbished Pub of the Year, 2008.

For some reason they remodeled the pub (not sure how long ago) with these wooden cubicle type areas around the bar area, which just kills the atmosphere (feels very closed in), it has lost it's charm. They still have a small open area in the back of the pub with the traditional open area which is where you will find everyone and a very small area at the front of the bar,(which on a Friday afternoon is a very old crowd). Standard beers on taps. Service is fine.

Victorian pub with beautiful embossed glass, wooden traditional decor. Other than small open area, there’s wooden cube set up around the bar with privacy. Impeccable service. Cons: -very limited beer choice, only Sam smith lager and ‘ stout’. (Larger half pint£3.80) -disgusting smell in toilets ( both gents and ladies)

Very atmospheric place(paintings, two floors, lamps, warm lights), but the rest is not on the same level. Pie was too crunchy and dry, definitely microwaved - cold outside and hot as hell inside. Waited order very long, hadn't got my tea(when it was brought, the cup was not clean). The portion was quite little for a pretty high price.

🚇Holborn 🍺 £6.70 Taddy Lager The Princess Louise is located on bustling High Holborn in Central London. The nearest Tube is Holborn which is just around the corner. This pub was built in 1872 and is Grade II listed. Princess Louise was the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and this is the only UK pub named after her. In 2007 the pub went through a comprehensive restoration which saw the reinstatement of the original multi-roomed layout with wood and etched glass dividing walls. The decor here is jaw droppingly beautiful, this is one of the finest preserved Victorian pub interior’s in…

Didn’t have food but had drink and used the toilets. According to my partner the gents toilets had a very strong smell of urine, but were spotless otherwise; could have something to do with the fact the urinals are listed, not sure. Lovely Sam Smiths pub
