About Red Lion

Roomy Victorian pub with sofas, log fire, high-ceilinged dining area, car park and huge beer garden.

A large Victorian landmark pub located at the entrance to the Wetland Centre. Built in 1830s and underwent a major refurbishment in 2017. There is a spacious wood paneled comfortable rear room, featuring a large coloured mosaic central domed ceiling light, leaded stained glass windows, and a large fireplace. Outside is a heated covered patio and beyond this a large artificial grass garden with plenty of seating that includes a children's fenced play area. A garden bar is open on busy summer days or as demand requires. There is also extensive outside seating around the side and front of the pub that includes two cosy 4-seat heated cabins.

Food is available from a varied, modern menu. The pub is renowned for its annual Great Sausage Roll Bake Off competition. A live cooking event where around 20 professional chefs take their turns to create, roll and bake their own take on the Sausage Roll. Master cellar-man accredited Fuller's House.

First registered as a public house known as 'The Strugglers' in 1718 but was destroyed by fire in 1835 and rebuilt in its present form along with the change of name. In recent times it was a hotel and a free house until 1978 when it was acquired by Fuller's.

Visited for Sunday lunch. Unable to book a table in advance as it was already booked up. We waited at the bar for a table in the bar. Roast was excellent and generous portions. Good wine selection and plenty of choice available by the glass. Lovely selection of gins too. They could do with a printed list of all the gins available with a one line description, we have amazing gins in the UK to chose from. Toilets are on the ground floor and lovely and clean. Beautiful large pub, I hope I have the opportunity to go back. Well run by management.

I was the first customer after doors open in the morning (I'd been waiting for my car to be serviced nearby and wanted somewhere to eat that wasn't full of Burberry waistcoats and hooray henriettas!). I ordered the Club Sandwich and an orange juice. The young man who served me was very friendly, and as I had never visited this particular branch of Mrs Miggins' port of fare, he patiently showed me the way things were done there. The sandwich was very tasty and a good portion size. Some of the bacon was burnt and the chicken was cold, as was the plate, but this was balanced by the overall…

Good service, gorgeous space with a traditional English pub indoor and various outdoor spaces to accommodate a large number of customers.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit this afternoon. It's hard to find good all rounder pubs in London nowadays but this place had the perfect autumnal cosy menu, warm but spacious dining room and spectacular service. We will be back!!

Super pub and huge on the inside. Great outdoor garden and front patio area is also good for catching the sun and watching the world go by. Sunday roasts are a must as we had had many recommendations to try one which we did late last year. Our most recent visit was for a small lunch and drink. I had the chicken club sandwich which comes with triple cooked chips and it was excellent and very well priced. We also tried the steak sandwich again very very nice. The pub is super dog friendly with lots of water bowls and not too cramped inside. Only criticism is there was lots of staff members…
