About Running Horses
A 16th-century country pub with elegant rooms, plus full English breakfast & free Wi-Fi.
Large and attractive 18th century, Grade II listed coach and posting inn on the old route to the coast from London. As shown on the double-sided inn sign, it is named after a run-off of the Derby in 1828 after there was a dead heat in the original race. Racehorses were stabled here and trained on the downs then. The pub is in good walking country with Mickleham Downs just above it and Denbies Vineyard nearby. The main bar is dominated by a large fireplace, where a real fire blazes away in winter. Beams and horse brasses abound. The front patio is popular when the weather is good. The restaurant is in converted stables which once housed horses entered for the Derby. There are 8 letting rooms (dogs not allowed).

What an incredible place! We stayed here for our wedding anniversary and we had the most enjoyable stay. We were greeted instantly with friendly staff who made us feel so welcome. The drinks in the pub were lovely and the food was amazing. The rooms are beautiful and we will definitely return! Thank you so much!

My daughter and I loved our stay at the Running Horses hotel last night. The atmosphere was very warm, the room very comfortable and decorated with care and above all the staff are very friendly. We dined in the restaurant and discovered delicious British cuisine. We highly recommend this place

Sunday roast. They found us a table in bar area so we could bring our dog in. Outside patio is lovely to sit at too as the road in front is not busy and you get view of church opposite. I had roast pork and it was so well cooked. Local IPA beer too! Good service too . Looking forward to our next visit!

Recent rare lunch treating nephew. Both had Chicken club sandwich that came with chips. Bread tasted poorer quality as though borderline stale. Chips were either overcooked or a re-heat of a re-heat. Really, you could very much better! Pumps also playing up, evidently, so was concerned about quality of my pint. But, despite delay, if seemed ok. This pub has been a favourite venue over 50 years, so disappointing.
