About Duke
Art Deco lamps and 30s style adorn a quiet pub offering real ales and British food, closed Sundays.
A CAMRA Heritage Pub for its outstanding interior; Art Deco features date from 1938, a part of an office and flat development with characteristic detailing and metal windows, what many inter-war pubs looked like before modern changes. The John's Mews entrance leads into a small wood-panelled lounge, whilst the corner entrance leads you into a larger bar decorated with artwork, but no longer with original lino flooring.
The back room features a number of original private booths and there are two in the front bar added more recently. Now calls itself under the abbreviated Duke but (of York) features still on the pub sign. In nearby Doughty Street can be found the Charles Dickens Museum, the author's only surviving London home.

I love this place. Really full of character. The income pew seats, the curved wooden bar. It oozes atmosphere. The music is always a bit retro. Service was good. They had a £5 card minimum spend. Usually fine but I had a coke and supplemented with crisps to overcome that hurdle. Really tucked away but a pub you can’t help but walk in if in the area.

1930s pub tucked away on the side streets of Clerkenwell. It was fairly quiet when we went here on a Saturday evening in August and we were able to sit at a table outside the front. Friendly staff and most people there appeared to be regulars.

The Duke is a hidden gem. Great atmosphere at the Art Deco building with mixture of booths and high tables. Usual suspects of drinks with a couple of guest ales on rotation. Could improve the AF beer selection but that’s just nitpicking.

I visited this delightful pub on a recent trip to see my London family. It's situated in a quiet, "mewsy" neighborhood away from the throng but a stone's throw from some great Bloomsbury restaurants. There is a wide selection of lagers and ales, the bar staff were friendly and welcoming and the clientele seemed like locals or the after work crowd. Loved the cozy booths and old-fashioned decor. Definitely get off the beaten path and check this place out.

Hercule's leetle grey cells would dance a big here. Just look at the bar lights!! Lovely, 1938 gaff that deserves to succeed under new landlord/lady ..
