About Lighterman

Slickly-designed, minimalist Modern British gastropub with big windows & a canal-side alfresco bar.

March 2023 - reported as no real ale. Confirmed in June 2024.

A visitor in May 2022 reported no cask beer available but a follow up found one cask beer - Five Points Pale. Brick Peckham Pale Ale was also listed on the beer menu but not available. You have to be seated on arrival (table service only) and the price is currently £5.50 for a pint but they have a compulsory 12.5% service charge that took the cost of a pint to £6.19. Note that payment is by card only - cash is no longer accepted.

A relatively new pub, dining room and bar on Granary Square, King’s Cross. The name is inspired by the industrial past of King’s Cross, and the Victorian Lightermen who worked on flat-bottomed barges, known as “Lighters”, on the canals and rivers of London.

On three floors offering great views across Granary Square and the Regent’s Canal, The ground floor has some high tables and stools by the bar but is mostly laid out for eating. The canal-side bar, which is more for drinking, is open Tues to Thu evenings from 4.30pm, from noon on Friday and from 11am on the weekend. Food served from opening until late.

It can get very noisy, especially when busy in the canal-side bar, as the low ceiling and "industrial-chic" decor cause the sound of voices to reverberate, exacerbated by the somewhat unnecessary booming bass from the speakers (which is about all you can discern).

This is an incredibly stunning location, the space is beautiful, tastefully decorated, and is near the canal. However, even though the Beaty of it is important, there needs to be more to elevate the whole experience. I ordered the monkfish scampi nuggets and the flatbread with shrimps, harissa and chives to start with, filled by the lamb cutlets. The 2 starters I ordered were ok but unremarkable, not very tasty at all, bordering on a lack of salt in both dishes. The best was the lamb cutlets that really saved the day . The service is ok, although not very prompt, despite of the fact this was…

Have been coming to the Lighterman for years with friends for drinks along the canal, it’s a great spot for that. Decided to try out the food and visited with a party of 4, we had a table out on the roof terrace which may have been the reason for my slight concerns. The table itself was excellent, looking over the square outside Central St Martins. However, we felt that frustratingly the outside tables were left a little to their own devices and service was not nearly as quick as you would have hoped. This is a relatively small issue given the food itself was actually incredibly good for…

I went there for my colleague's leaving do. We booked with a deposit and they booked us at the wrong place which we thought was very poor of them. As we had to be in the general area, rather than a private function room, it was very difficult to have a conversation with everyone. The general area is very echoey and noisy with other customers. The food was nice (I ordered tuna and chocolate mousse) but very expensive for what you get. I understand that everything is super expensive around King's X nowadays but we weren't impressed about the experience at all. I won't go there again for either…

The place was lovely. Staff were very helpful and kind. Food was delicious. We had a table for 2:30 hours. During that time we enjoyed. Price wise it was not too bad but still it’s bit expensive. We had a lovely time there.

Overall experience was not great. I ordered the chicken schnitzel and it was a little stiff but alright. We also ordered the Wagyu burger which was pretty good as well. Everything however was pretty expensive, overpriced in my opinion for the quality of the food. Only thing that saved this from 2 stars was the atmosphere, which was very nice apart from only having 1:30 hours to sit, eat, and enjoy the scenery.
