Black Friar, Blackfriars

About Black Friar

Traditional pub with Henry Poole's Art Nouveau reliefs reflecting the friary that once stood there.

Built in the 1875 but substantially altered in 1905 with the creation of the exquisite facade and specular interior in now a very rare Art Nouveau style. Friars in marble and brass carouse their way around the pubs interior and exterior and the grotto (dining area) is clad in matched Italian marble topped with Romanesque ceiling gold leaf. A sight to behold! A lively city pub welcoming office workers and tourists.

Great historic pub to visit. Very lively inside and outside. Reservations worked great and got seated within minutes of arriving. Hosted/server juggled multiple tasks all while still being very attentive to each table. He did a phenomenal job. Food was good, but nothing to rave about. The only dislike was that the main dishes were not served hot as they both tasted room temp.

Food was amazing, I had the steak pie and mash potatoes, it was the best I've ever had. Friends had fish and chips and they were good but not as good as chip shop fish and chips. We plan to go back and check out what they have to offer for breakfast. Would advise making a reservation. The architecture was stunning, our photos do not do it justice. Note: bathrooms are down a steep set of stairs

Busy after work pub right next to the river. Has outdoor seating. Was very busy when I was there, but the staff were quick and attentive. Decor and theme were medieval and added to the feel of the place. Food which was served looked good but didn't get a chance to try.

We visited this historic pub by booking a London historic pub tour on Viator which was a great experience! The vibe of the pub was amazing, the décor specially in the dining room area was amazing and beer was very welcoming too! We enjoyed very much!

If you can only do one pub in London, make sure it is this one! Over the years, I have done over a hundred pubs in London, and this is still my favorite. The location is easy for tourists: it is right outside the Blackfriars tube station. It is one of the most unique-looking and storied pubs in London. The ales will satisfy; the food is traditional pub fare but done nicely. Take time to enjoy the architecture of the building and its history while you are there.
