About Canonbury Tavern

This sophisticated pub in a 19th-century building offers a British gastro menu and garden seating.

Reverted to its original name in 2016. Two-thirds devoted to restaurant space. Comfortable modern furniture. Very large garden area to side and rear. In 2014 became an accredited member of the CAMRA LocAle scheme, beers may be sourced from various London breweries such as Sambrook's, Hammerton and Hackney. Sunday quiz. No local beers found Jan 2024. In 2015 taken back by Young's into direct ownership/operation. It has has been a public house since the early 1700's and boasts a rich and varied history.

In 1846 The Canonbury Tavern was demolished and rebuilt on the same land. In the early 20th century the top floor was removed following a fire and never replaced. This is why the staircase leads to nowhere. George Orwell, who lived in Canonbury Square, wrote part of 1984 whilst sitting under the tree in the garden in the 1940's.

We had a great afternoon following our legal wedding. The staff were so accommodating during the booking process as our plans changed. We had a great area by the entrance to the garden which was just perfect for our guests. The canapés were delicious and great table service from the team on the day. Also dog friendly which was perfect for our pooch! Would highly recommend. Thank you! ☺️

We had our wedding reception at The Canonbury, and it was absolutely perfect. From the staff and food to the service and venue, everything was exceptional. Emma from the team was fantastic; she communicated with us for weeks, always responding promptly with answers and solutions. On the day itself, the service was flawlessly executed. We rented the beautiful Spencer Room on the first floor, which was the perfect size and setting. The pub itself is gorgeous, nestled in a lovely neighborhood with beautiful classic interiors. The beer garden is arguably the best in Islington, spacious with…

Lovely, large pub with tasteful decor. Friendly service and excellent food. Went there yesterday for their Quiz Night (£2.50 per person) and really enjoyed it.

Had our engagement party here last weekend. Had an outside booking they were able to find space for 20 of us inside with less than 24hrs notice! Food was great but the wine was on the expensive side.

Lovely venue and atmosphere Thought my meal was way overpriced. Cottage pie a small portion in a tiny bowl. Menu said it comes with roasted root vegetables but turned out to be just 3 carrot sticks, boiled, and some cress leaves. All for £19. The meal was nice but I feel rather exploited financially which is a shame.
