About Marquess Tavern
Warm, snug & quirky stop serving pub grub classics such as burgers, plus wines, craft beers & ales.
Following the sale of their tenanted pubs the Marquess is now part of Punch Taverns. A local resident has sent us the following, "The establishment is now a pub once again rather than a restaurant, which it has been for the past few years. The staff are very welcoming and friendly and I would recommend a visit if you live locally or are in the area."
Built c.1854 along with the area, named after the Marquess of Northampton and acquired by Young's in 1979. A fine example of the architecture of the time and a Grade II listed building. The interior, however, has been much altered and opened out in the intervening years. The most recent refurbishment has created a fairly subdued atmosphere in the main bar area with the inevitable soft sofas dominating. The real fire has been maintained. A small patio area on the street is available for outside drinking.
Note on bank holiday Mondays it opens 12-10. The Islington Architects Virtual Darts team meets at the pub on Wednesdays.

I visited on Sunday for the roast and.. it didn’t disappoint! The beef roast was lovely, the portion generous and the gravy was banging. The starters are also very good and the staff attentive

Recently had a great experience at such a difficult time, two funerals in the space of a month. Had the wake at the Marquess Tavern & am still amazed at the compassion & service we received by the staff. Our family & friends all commented on the staff, they were kind & considerate. The food was delicious, so we had the second wake there too. Highly recommend these guys, give them a visit, they're a fab group of people & you will not be disappointed. Thank you all again as a family we are very grateful.

Update August 2024 Literally the best Sunday roast in the area with superb sides and trimmings. Excellent friendly staff and beautiful traditional interiors. Huge portions with delicious roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips, leeks in cheese, Yorkshire pudding, bread sauce too! The cauliflower cheese side was crispy and had a delicious bite to it. The Chicken schnitzel was crispy and light and not oily or deep fried as is often the case! Great desserts, spoilt for choice. Highly recommend. Pleasant gastropub in the heart of Canonbury. The Marquess tavern is an old established pub with two beer…

A style all of its own. A magnificent building, the Marquess Tavern is a superb place to visit. A great part of the Young's offering, well done to all concerned. Great beer and wonderful friendly service. A beautiful sophisticated pub. There is a simple, but well presented menu, the food looks great (I did not have time to indulge). I recommend a visit.

I had the £12 weekday lunch deal: a sandwich or light lunch plus a glass of house wine, beer or soft drink. I chose the small fish and chips with mushy peas and tartar sauce. Everything was homemade and the fish was exceptional. I had a glass of lovely, dry white wine with it. Great service and excellent value.
