About City Barge

Riverside, historic pub with some outdoor terrace seating serving a modern British menu.

Built in 1484 and originally called the Navigators Arms it later became the Bohemia Head and the City Navigation Barge, after the Lord Mayor’s barge which used to be moored nearby during the winter. The Beatles video for 'Help' was reputed to be filmed inside the City Barge. The pub had an extensive refurbishment in early 2014 and the interior is now light and bright and clean-looking, having the feel of a renovated country pub. The downstairs has now become a restaurant with locally-sourced seafood a speciality. The upstairs at street level is the bar, with a good selection of six rotating real ales and a cider; the ales include an own-label Argy Bargy and it is intended to change beers on a regular basis and also support craft breweries. Beers are served in old style pint pots which adds to the enjoyment! The Ale Manager is knowledgable and helpful, and can suggest good pairings of ales and food. Service and staff friendliness have received good reviews. Function room and WCs are on the uppermost level and there is a nice garden at the back of the pub, with outside tables on the river side. NB the towpath by the pub is subject to occasional but rapid tidal flooding so if trapped you may need to make your escape via the road entrance. NB. This is now a CARD ONLY payment pub.

I recently had the pleasure of enjoying a Sunday Roast, and I must say the experience exceeded my expectations. The food was not only fresh and perfectly seasoned, but also beautifully presented. The roast was tender, the vegetables were cooked just right, and the gravy added a rich depth of flavor to every bite. You can tell that a lot of care goes into preparing each dish. I’ll definitely be coming back with my family to enjoy it again soon! Highly recommend for anyone looking for a classic and well-executed Sunday meal.

Food was delicious, and the service very good, fabulous ambiance, they didn't rush me. The fish and chips were on a visit to England in late September 2023. The lamb was from a visit to England in late June to July. Everything was so fabulous I just had to go back again. I hope to go back to the City Barge next visit and have the Sunday roast and also have a walk along the beautiful waterfront.

I recently dined with friends and had an exceptional experience. The dishes were absolutely delicious and of high quality. It had been a long time since we had enjoyed such exquisite cuisine. The chef has an excellent sense of taste. Nothing was overly salted, and everything was perfectly seasoned. We were all thoroughly impressed. We give it five stars. We highly recommend it and will definitely be returning.

The Fish and Chips were outstanding—fresh, perfectly cooked fish with a crisp, golden exterior and flaky inside. The chips were fresh, crispy outside, soft inside, and paired perfectly with tasty dips. A fantastic meal overall, highly recommended!
