About Duke of Cambridge

Gastropub with stripped-down decor serving organic beer, wine and meat plus sustainable fish.

Set on a corner, the Duke is very much a gastro pub with a range of up to four organic cask beers which may come with no finings, so don't judge the beers with your eyes! There are large plain glass windows, which gives the pub a light airy feel with the dark blue ceiling being offset by the beige walls. The wooden floors and tables add to the bistro atmosphere. A smaller, more intimate eating area at the back of pub leads to a courtyard with seating. There is additional outside seating at the front. The pub is certified by The Soil Association and, as you will see from their website, they have a very ethical policy.

The Culpeper Family Hospitality Group is a group of four pubs and restaurants across East and North London - The Culpeper near Spitalfields, The Buxton on Brick Lane, The Duke of Cambridge in Islington and The Green in Clerkenwell.

I had very bad expectations of this place, it honestly the price-food quality found it quite disappointing. We ordered the lamb, fish of the day, crab toast and tomato salad which were pretty average, and for these three dishes plus a couple of drinks we payer £110. I think overall the lack of flavours was probably the biggest expectations misalignment, especially when taking about a place that serves organic food. Service was great, we arrived when the kitchen was about to close and the very happily served us food.

They have several vegan food options. The price you pay is fair for the complexity of the main. It consisted of many layers and different ingredients. The environment is cosy and welcoming.

As a fan of Sunday Roasts, I decided to try it out with friends for the first time. The place has a nice, spacious atmosphere and friendly staff. However, as someone who enjoys variety, I was disappointed by the limited roast options – only two were available, and I was really craving lamb or pork. Additionally, the prices seemed excessive, especially £28 for a chicken roast without the bone, or £11 for a glass of wine. Despite these drawbacks, our visit was pleasant, but expect a hefty bill for a typical Sunday roast experience!

Spacious, peaceful, great food and staff. Organic produce… so a touch more expensive. Good spot for a sunny lunch outside (if you can grab a table at 12, when the pub opens!), always book ahead on Sundays.

I think the best way to describe the Duke is gourmet dining meets cozy family dining with a strong environmental mission. The food is so good that 9 plates out of 10 are basically licked clean. It’s all organic, locally sourced, seasonal ingredients with options for everyone (vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and meat and sea food lovers) all while not being overwhelming with too many choices. The staff is super kind and warm and at the slightest rare mistake or discontent they really care to fix it. Even all the customers are lovely and many become regulars. Be it a family sunday roast, a date…
