About Earl Of Essex

Serious beer drinkers' pub with a compact menu where each dish is matched to one of 20 craft brews.

On recent visits in April 2024 it was confirmed that they no longer have regular beers and intend to rotate 4 cask ales.

A craft beer house, 4 cask handpumps plus plenty of craft keg (up to 14 taps) which did have its own on-site brewery but this ceased operations some time ago. Real ale comes from an ever changing list of breweries both local and national. In addtion one real cider is served on handpump.

There is a very impressive list of bottle beers including some fine beers from Belgium. Wide food selection has been introduced, see website for full details. As with an increasing number of pubs, the use of pumpclips has been dropped and the beers and ciders on sale are listed on a large board.

I'm not sure why I haven't reviewed this pub sooner, given how often I've been there. But better late than never, right? This place is a real hidden gem, ticking off all the boxes for a great neighbourhood pub: cosy atmosphere, excellent beer selection, charming garden, delicious Sunday roast, and friendly staff. It's everything you could want in a local pub. Huge thanks to the team for always making it such a pleasant experience, whether it's a casual evening or a lazy Sunday meal.

Food review only: if you’re looking for very average but highly priced food. This is the spot. Of course being a pub I don’t have unrealistic expectations of the food. However when my food came. I was genuinely speechless. I had a teriyaki salmon with broccoli, the salmon was dry and not fresh. Not to mention very very small. The spring onion garnish on top is clearly left over from the night before (unless it’s just been chilling on the kitchen counter for the past 10hrs). The broccoli was oven roasted, fine. This would have been okay with me apart from the fact that this cost £17. For a…

I visited this place for roasts a month ago and was very happy with the food so came back with my friend from abroad and it’s her first sunday roast trying in the uk. My friend and I had a very high expectation for this occasion but were totally disappointed. We ordered beef roasts and the beef came out very dry/overcooked. Even the roast potatoes weren’t crispy enough. It didn’t taste like freshly made roasts from the kitchen. And clearly was not worth £21 for a dish. The inside of the pub still is lovely and the staff are nice but I won’t come back for food anymore. It was so disappointing.

Lovely variety of draft beers. The interior of the pub is very nice ,they play cool music and the bartenders are very kind.

Great food, fantastic range of keg beer. Cask beer not on brilliant form. Atmosphere loud on a Friday night (as to be expected). Staff are excellent.
