Fountains Abbey, Paddington

About Fountains Abbey

Victorian pub with original tile & leaded windows, former haunt of biologist Sir Alexander Fleming.

Busy 1895 pub facing St. Mary’s Hospital, from which much trade is drawn. The name derives not from the famous ruins in Yorkshire but from springs in the area and former ownership of the land by Westminster Abbey. There is a large lounge bar with raised, railed-in seating at one end and an ornamental fireplace at the other. Can be noisy. Was Tavistock’s between 1986 and 1995 before reverting to its original, 1823, name. Restaurant and function room on the first floor.

After a pint or two this pub is handily placed for a visit to the Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum in the hospital opposite; Fleming discovered penicillin here in 1928 (limited opening hours for museum, check first).

I am NO relative of Alexander Fleming. Honest review LOL. Well clearly Alexander had good taste. Drinks were great and so was the food. Picture of empty plates as it was too good to let go cold and faff around taking pictures. Atmosphere is great it is an old pub and feels like stepping back in time... The is a telly for sports though. I was here on a Sunday and it was mellow and relaxing... Great looking out the window at the hustle and bustle. Table 11 is great as it is near the door but on a raised platform. The range of seating is great depending on your visit. Tall bar tables and…

Lovely pub to visit. Good selection of drinks, nice food and very friendly staff. We opted for the steak pie which was well presented, arrived in good time and tasted delicious. My only criticism is that the pie would benefit from having more steak in it. Definitely worth a visit, and it's family friendly. 4/5

Embarrassing that they served the food, potatoes either Raw or not defrosted, Yorkshire pudding that knife couldn't get through, and meat was so tough, genuinely the worst excuse for food ever, the bar staff never even apologised when I spoke about it.

The Fountains Abbey, a fine Greene King pub on Prayed Street, opposite the main entrance to St Mary's hospital. Busy as anything, lots of football supporters watching the screens with partisan enthusiasm. All good. A fine selection of cask and keg ales on offer, great service from everyone behind the bar, thanks to all.
