About Gatehouse
Large 1930s timber-framed pub set below a fringe theatre, Upstairs at the Gatehouse.
With a theatre upstairs, this Tudor style building, formerly a Watney's pub was refurbished in 1993, being the oldest of Highgate inns dating from about 1380. It was run by Wetherspoons from 1993 until its sale to Urban Pubs & Bars. Decor little changed, a lot of the internal space is for diners but there is still plenty of room for drinkers.
Where the handpumps used to be, it's all keg fonts, while the handpumps now occupy a previously empty corner of the bar. It is a large rambling pub at the top of Highgate Hill, two separate outside areas - the larger, secluded one at the back is exclusively for diners, that at the front of the pub is a drinking area where you get excellent views of the impressive Highgate School buildings opposite.
The theatre - Upstairs at The Gatehouse, details can be found at www.upstairsatthegatehouse.com, separate phone 020 8340 3488.

It was a lovely last-minute choice for Sunday Roast to finally visit The Gatehouse, as we had designs elsewhere, but all were sold out at 5pm (reasonable, obviously!) However, the offerings here exceeded our expectations, and some in our group also had haddock and chips, which was delightfully huge, very well cooked and crispy fish, with plenty of chunky chips. The chicken roast was sublime, gravy was plentiful and meaty, and the veg was as soft and crispy as each carrot, potato, and cabbage leaf should be! The servers were very busy but attentive and friendly, and my only real chagrin was…

Hip Highgate pub which has regular theatre events upstairs. The pub itself is very nice with a beer garden for sitting outside (weather permitting). It also has a good range of beers and though we didn't eat there, it has a good reputation for high quality food. We went to the theatre upstairs to see a band called the Jive Aces (highly recommended). The theatre is small and probably holds about 100 people but it gives it a good buzzy feel. I enjoyed the evening (and the pub) enormously!

Everything was great, in fact, when I was separated from my wife, I used to come to this pub. This wonderful story summarizes its history very well with old photographs. I hope to sit in your garden one day

I came here with my Mum and we had the sourdough, pear salad and triple cooked chips. Everything was really great and the service was amazing, very lovely staff working here. Highly recommend!

Had been quite a while since we'd visited; I remember it being a bit chaotic. Not so now, the layout has changed a bit and clearly for the better. The food was amazing, best chips I've had in years, and the range of drink was good too. Finding a mild on cask is always a win! Staff were very helpful and friendly and it was a really lovely pub to rest and escape to
