About Goat Tavern

Bustling, cozy local with dark wood decor, real ales and traditional British pub food.

Licensed in 1688, the Goat is on the site of the former Clarendon House, home of the Lord Chancellor to Charles II. The freeholder Matthew Tomlinson in a will dated 1735 bequeathed an annual sum from his rental from the site, for clothing poor men and women of adjacent parishes, and this continued for more than 200 years!

Former customers included Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton, the latter of whom lived nearby. Carrying on the naval tradition, in the Edwardian era the smoking room upstairs was a favourite rendezvous for senior naval officers.

Rebuilt in 1958, now this is a small pub with a goat effigy on the frontage and additional seating upstairs.

The steak and ale pie was absolutely delicious. My wife and I could not finish our meal. It's a very lage pie. The service was outstanding...friendly and never had an empty glass. Cheers!

Loved this tavern. The bartender made excellent recommendations and better conversation for a couple of travelers. So glad we made the short excursion off Piccadilly.

Reservations placed prior for the Sunday roast. Requested the beef. They said that they had been out of the beef. We tried the chicken. Very bland. Tasted boiled. Underwhelming.

I’ve got a couple of good friends for whom The Goat is a venerated institution. In their eyes it’s the epitome of what a little Mayfair boozer should be…..so I finally visited for myself. There’s beauty in modesty (tell that to the kids on social media), The Goat is a cozy understated affair, it’s the pub equivalent of your Nan’s front room. Homely.
