Nell Gwynne, London WC2

About Nell Gwynne

Traditional pub with dark wood decor, hanging lamps and jukebox, serving draught beers and toasties.

Tiny, hard to find Grade II listed pub in a gas lit alleyway between Maiden Lane and the Strand, rebuilt in the late 1890s. Note the Art Nouveau tilework in the passage to the Strand. The dark red colouring of walls and ceiling, together with subdued interior lighting and effectively non-existent natural light, create a very cosy effect. Small raised area at end of bar.

Beers include a regular and up to three guest ales, whilst the food offering comprises cheese & charcuterie plates. A splendid little place for anyone wanting to recapture the Dickensian pleasures of well-hidden pubs, or get over a session of 'retail therapy'. The pub boasts "one of London’s best jukeboxes packed with classics for the discerning ear". Beware steep stairs down to WC.

What a fantastic pub. There has been a drinking establishment on this site since the 1600's according to one of the staff. We literally stumbled across it today after I glimpsed flowers down the side alley. Lovely piece of London history.

Nice pub off the busy street. Great atmosphere with the retro jukebox. Loses a star for the average beer choice. Nothing exciting in the way of craft or cask but a nice place for a pint none the less.

Another first for me, tucked away down a small alley off the Strand evidenced by the lack of tourists. Inside it's pretty small so customers inevitably spill out into the alleyway, so be prepared to dodge Deliveroo cyclists and the rest. Good selection of lagers (Camden Hells, London Pilsner) and ales (London Pride, Landlord). Definitely one to recommend if you want something central but not too touristy despite the location.

Lovely and cozy little pub tucked away off of The Strand. Good jukebox. Friendly bar tenders.
