Ship, Mortlake

About Ship

18th-century river pub with timber floors and beer garden, overlooking the Boat Race finishing line.

Built in 1781, the Ship is without doubt most famous for its location on the finishing line of the Oxford/Cambridge Boat Race. This ex Taylor Walker pub now has external Greene King branding. Located at the end of Ship Lane off the Lower Richmond Road in Mortlake, to the rear of what was the old Watney’s Brewery, the Ship is set back off the river.

Dear oh dear this place is simply not the ticket. In fairness some Greene King pubs have got their act together in recent times, but this isn’t one of them. From the word go the pub felt tatty and unloved. The drink selection was subpar and there were only two ales on and several pumps covered over. Even the keg staples such as Estrella had bitten the dust. A pint of Nastro Azzuro and Level Head came to £15.50. Really? It’s more expensive than central London at this point (even by the river in town at some quite nice places) and this place has no glamour and charm to it. Quite the opposite…

absolutely one of the worst pubs in London . lazy , uninterested staff, the place is so dirty and warn out its untrue and run by people who do not care, we arrived from our walk around 5pm Saturday, every table was dirty and had dirty plates and glasses on them both inside and outside had been left for hours and hours ... the wait time at the bar is ridiculous for the number of people asking to be served and the number of staff serving , the female member of staff avoiding doing anything at all , no effort was made to clear anything or tidy the pub in the time we were there , the…

A lovely pub. Atmospheric with old photos and low lighting. A decent view of the river and a nice outdoor area. The staff were friendly. If you plan on having the sharing platter of nachos order early! They are handmade and only a set quantity made. We missed out on the nachos. 😔 But the calamari battered strips and battered halloumi were very tasty.

What a beautiful place and a great location. We met other family and took a gentle stroll along the river. We fancied a bite so walked to the ship. We were greeted by milo who was full of smiles. There were 11 of us in total and we hadn’t booked for food but had no trouble being accommodated by Milo. Food was outstanding and the price was incredible. I was shocked as I thought my bank balance would be suffering but it certainly didn’t! Milo also went out of his way to accommodate for my 10month old who has a cows milk protein allergy. He could offer us dairy free, vegan ice cream! We will…

Went here with family from the crematorium next door where we received a remarkably warmer reception. Service was rude from the get go - we got there as they opened and were immediately warned that food won’t come on time, coffee machine was broken so don’t ask for coffee alongside rolling eyes and sighs with every drink order! The way the server spoke to us all was shocking - I have worked in retail but never received such bad attitude! I am not one to leave a bad review but this service was so bad we finished our drinks we paid for and left to go eat elsewhere. Do not recommend.
