About Watchman

Wetherspoons pub in former police station dating from the 1890s. The cask cellar is visible through a window in the passageway behind the bar. At least one guest beer is usually from a local brewery. There is a memorial garden at the front to a local policeman who died in the line of duty. It is called the Watchman because, being a former police station, it had an air raid siren on the roof during WWII. There was a member of the Royal Observer Corps up there with binoculars and when he saw bombers from Germany on their way he operated the siren. You can still see the iron railings on the pub roof where the siren was, but the siren itself was removed in the 1980s. Opens at 8am for food and non-alcoholic drinks. Has a real fire in the conservatory at the back. Accredited for beer quality during 2023 and Local CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2023.

Quite busy on the Friday afternoon i visited in October. I had the Afternoon Special with a Guinness for £7.62. Nice fish and chips, however, the Guinness wasn't the best I've had in a spoons.

Nice and low level noise today. Fire 🔥 blazing away nice and cosy. Not too frantic at T time. Enjoyed nice grilled katsu chicken. Bananas with berries and custard, delicious 😋 .

The pub is lovely & their service time is really fast. It’s become my go to pub now! There are plenty of food options from Korean to Indian menus and i love their Jalfarezi curry. I would have given it a 5 star but every time i have been there the bar staff is really rude and their faces are always frustrated. I understand it’s difficult to work in a pub but i went on a Sunday! It wasn’t busy at all. So yeah a smile and kindness wouldn’t hurt.

While having drinks a member of the public was arguing with the bar staff being refused to be served. The man was clearly being rude and he spat at the bartender. Witnessed by my friends and I along with other patrons. After 5 min of what I consider an assault incident the man was still in the bar. The management appeared not to be taking any action regarding the incident, not asking him to leave or supporting the members of staff that had been assaulted. We asked if they had called the police and the answer was no because no one had been physically hit. So I called the police to report the…

Such a lovely place, beautiful building with really friendly staff and the fastest service I've seen anywhere (I would literally put my phone down from ordering and the drinks were in front of me) Highly recommend!! Shout out to the waitress with the blue hair who was serving us at the speed of sound!
