About Ivy House
London's first pub co-operative, with draft ale and food plus original interior and stage for bands.
Large 1930s Grade II listed multi-roomed pub built by Truman's Brewery and retaining many original features and fittings. The pub was the first in the country to be registered as an Asset of Community Value, was then acquired via the community right to buy provisions of the Localism Act, and re-opened in Summer 2013. It advertises itself as London's first community owned pub. See the pub's website for details of the numerous community and music events held. As the Newlands Tavern this was a famous South London "Pub Rock" music venue in the 1970s. Lots of dark wood and many original Truman's fittings. The front bar has a curved counter with 4 handpumps and there is a black and white tiled spittoon round its base. A double doored partition leads to a massive rear room with another bar counter and further tiled spittoon at its base. This room has an ornamented and curtained stage. To the right rear is another area of seating and is dominated by a massive fireplace. Truman's gold lettering remains at picture rail level in the front bar advertising its Burton and London heritage and some of its beers. There are plans to bring back the former public bar area into use (it was a licensee's flat for many years) which is currently used for storage. A real feast for the eyes of any lover of how London suburban big brewery "Improved Public House" pubs used to be.

Brilliantly weird pub doing so many good things. Good range of beers and had the strongest ipa I’ve ever seen on tap Life music venue in the back which is perfect for small gigs. Great boozer

Chilled, friendly, unpretentious and seems like an all-round great place. History and community innovation fuse with an alchemy few can match. The kind of pub that makes moving in within walking distance a sound proposition. #10 #43

Great beers with large local selection. Always a fun atmosphere with lots of interesting groups (book group and a knitting circle). Nice tables out front and big sheltered garden out back. We normally eat their home made pizza - but kitchen is closed Monday; but they were happy for us to order in from our favourite local pizza Mamma Dough. Just about perfect pub experience.

Hadn't been to this pub for many years and was somewhat disappointed. Firstly, they've got rid of their car park and turned it into a "covered outside space", which I suppose is fine when the weather is good but I'm guessing it's hardly been used for the last six months. There is a little car park round the corner, but it's not free. The next thing I found disappointing is that there are only two tables which are normal height with normal chairs. The rest are high tables with tall stools that anyone with mobility issues (me!) or who is over a certain age (also me!) would struggle to get on…

Always a fun place to go to, especially if there’s live music on. Saw Meatraffle there last week - a storming night out! Decent range of beers (some local) and tasty pizza to soak up the booze. What’s not to like?
