About Macintosh Ale House

The Macintosh Ale House opened in July 2023 as an outlet for beers from the Macintosh Ales brewery. Charles Macintosh is the genial host behind the bar as well as brewing the beer at Orbit brewery in Walworth. Usually two beers are available, the Best Bitter on handpump and the Pale Ale on keg. Later in the year, there are plans for extending the beer range brewed.

The premises are part of a small mews of former stables behind the Clarence pub on Church Street, it is nicely hidden and a secret haven for those in the know. Seating inside is around tables for about 20 drinkers and a few stools at the bar, crisps available. Decor is plain with a growing amount of beer and brewing memorabilia."

Possibly the smallest pub in London opens onto a former cobbled stable-yard (studded with wooden benches) - could be mistaken for a “Peaky Blinders” episode locale. Calling this unassuming and basic would hardly be judged an exaggeration: here you’re unlikely to be overwhelmed by a burden of expectations. 2 items only - a house pale ale “made from spring barley and Kentish hops” and a bitter “made from winter barley and whole leaf hops” covers the territory comfortably. Now this might not sound like much but criticism would be unwarranted: the beer is good, the setting offbeat, the vibe…

🚇 Stoke Newington 🍺 £5.50 Macintosh IPA The Macintosh Ale House is located in a former stables on a cobbled courtyard just behind the Clarence pub on Church Street in Stoke Newington. The nearest station is Stoke Newington overground, it’s a ten minute walk to get here. The Macintosh Ale House opened in July 2023. Macintosh Ales started brewing bottle & cask conditioned ales in a London garage in 2018. This is a tiny one room boozer that has the feel of a village drinking den in the middle of nowhere. The servey is centrally located and forms a hub to gather around. Dotted around the…

Really enjoyed our evening in this local ale house. Been walking past many times before but never got around a visit before. There's one pale, one bitter, red or white wine to chose from. I really liked the pale ale. The place is doggo friendly as well. 🐶🍺

On Thursday evening I was moaning about there not being anywhere within walking distance that makes me think "ooo I'll go to pub X because they do a really nice tasty moreish pint". There's a lot of ok'ish generic pub beer out there! But how wrong I was... Macintosh Ales tap room came up trumps with two very good ales (pale ale, best bitter) brewed right there. Something is very right about being able to see the sacks of barley just in the next room, that end up in your glass. Why called Macintosh Ales? "Because that's my name," said Mr Macintosh. Ok then, makes sense. No trendy designer…

The Macintosh is what I would describe as a juicer. Somewhere to go for a nice pint with no pomp or theme, just good beer on tap. No food menus just the good old staples of a packet of crisps or a pork pie should the occasion take you. The atmosphere is friendly and cosy 100% worth a visit if you're in town and a great addition to the community.
