About Old Star

Classic Victorian pub with food and drink deals and 2 intimate arched alcoves seating 20 people.

The Old Star has three floors - an upstairs function room, a split-level ground floor with bar and eating areas, and a basement Vaults Bar full of nooks and crannies. There is plenty of London Underground memorabilia - appropriately so, LUL HQ being across the road, above St James's Park tube and next to that rather austere, unforgiving and dominating glory of the 20th century, the former Home Office. Designed by Fitzroy Robinson & Partners with Sir Basil Spence this is now a Euro-style Ministry of Justice (and apparently known by inmates as the Lubyanka, by others as 'that irredeemable horror', 'hulking', or simply 'Brutalist') - retreating to the Old Star is one of the options. Nicknamed at one stage "The Cab House" because it was a well-known watering-hole for hansom cab drivers.

The pub swingsign shows the British Army 1914-15 Star; about 2.4 million are thought to have been issued.

As a child, I had been here before, and in my memories, this was a fantastic (and delicious) place to have lunch. After several years, I finally got to visit the place again, and it fully lived up to my memories! Quick, friendly staff, located at a beautiful central spot near Buckingham Palace and the adjacent park! Highly recommended, by far one of the best fish and chips places in London.

Lovely traditional pub, but with modern decor, seating over 3 areas/floors. Great location, and because slightly tucked away I thought reasonable prices. Sunday lunch with good cask ale, and very friendly staff.

So you ask the barmaid what the darkest ale is and was told Greene King IPA......but said barmaid recently served a guest ale to a punter and which was much darker, so top tip don't ask the staff about beer, they have no idea. Large wine, pint and coke over £20....ouch. Ale was slightly on the turn....sediment at bottom. So I head to Wetherspoons afterwards for a better pint and service. London pubs like these trade on heritage only.....not on a beer or service. Shame. Also note have to ask for top up of ale as a large head is not acceptable but barmaid clearly happy to serve under a…

Stopped in for a bite to eat before sight seeing! Aldo took great care of us and the food and drinks were great! The lunch and drink special is a great touch and the perfect amount you need for an afternoon snack. Highly recommend this place!

Stopped by while I was out of town on work. It was a nice place to set up camp while I had a few video calls to do! I had some lunch during my visit and the food was great (especially the brownie). Aldo and Hannah were really lovely and welcoming too!
