About Oriental Club (Stratford House)

Originally founded in 1824 for officers and gentlemen who had served in the Empire's eastern possessions, and who found themselves unwelcome in the more aristocratic St. James's clubs of the time. Although many members still have oriental connections, membership has broadened out following the end of empire.

The club has moved a couple of times in its history but is now just off Oxford Street, in a building constructed in the 1770s for Edward Stratford, later the second Earl of Aldborough. The central range of the building was designed by Robert Adam.

The club now offers excellent facilities including Michelin-quality dining. There are various bars in the building with different opening times; bar and food hours given are for the Calcutta Light Horse Bar which serves one cask ale. Events are held in the club several times a month.

The Club celebrated its bicentenary in 2024.

A private-members club steeped in rich history going back 200 years when it was a haven for returning officers from India and the Far East. Moved to Stratford House in 1962 and is marketed as a “home from home”. Great historical touches thought out the building. Impressive architecture. Attentive staff and stunning meals. Can obtain a members joining pack from reception. Need to be nominated by a member. Annual membership fees apply. Great experience.

Member only club. Located a two minute walk from Bond Street. Impressive building and interior. The bar did not do cocktails, one had to go to the Calcutta bar for cocktails. The main dining room was impressive. Nice interior, just been refurbished. Table for two was too small when we had our mains, side plates had to be removed. Bread was ok but was charge £4.50 for it. Would have rather have papadoms The Indian street food dish was good. The lamb samosa was gamey. Other three items was good. The keralan prawn curry was on the blend side and the chicken makhani curry was good. £21.50…

Prestigious members club built for returning officers of East India Company. Atmospheric period interior with India paintings. Nice outdoor courtyard for dining with first rate Indian food

Fantastic club. The staff are incredible attentive and the food was brilliant - the wine pairing for dinner was fantastic. Not a fan of white wine but the ones they brought out were great. The bar it nice and intimate and again the staff are so politics and welcoming. Would love to come here again
